Research steps

1) Before you begin to research any topic, you must lay the groundwork. Start by asking questions. The 5 W's and the H are a good place to start (Who, What, Where, When,  Why and How). Don't try to answer the question yet! You're finding out all the parts of the question, so answers are premature.

2) Get feedback from others. What insights do they have that can help you address the problem?

3) Prioritize the parts of the question. What do you need to know first before you can learn the rest?

4) Make a list of places where you can get the answers. Include hard-copy sources as well as Internet ones. Don't forget interviewing real, live people!

5) Determine your method of keeping track of your notes. Use notecards, a folder, a binder...just pick a format and stick with it.

6) Start taking notes. Lots of notes. Take more notes. Don't stop taking notes. Do you think you have enough notes?  Take more notes!

7) AT  THE SAME TIME YOU'RE TAKING NOTES, keep your Works Consulted page up-to-date.
